There are actually 2 nuclear power stations there. Hunterston A stoped generation in 1992 which is now being decommissioned and Hunterston B stilll operating and will do so beyond 2016.

There is also a deep water Ore Terminal which has been there for quite few decades, it mainly lands coal these days adjacent to that you'll also find the disused area where they built the dry dock for the Trident boats in the late 80's - a structure that was 25% bigger than the QE2.

Hi Jeff - Indeed, we seem to be travelling back in time and all the promises of a clean energy future are looking suspect now. I should inform you that there is a nuclear power station located at Hunterston at the moment, but it is due to be decommissioned in 2016. Nonetheless, this would go right next to it where there is the SSSI and still some natural beauty. Let's hope that it doesn't come to pass, although the golf course being built by Mr Trump in Aberdeen is also going on an SSSI.

My Grandparents were apart of the coal generation. My Granddad was a miner, and most of the houses in Pittsburgh at the time were heated by burning coal. If he was alive today would he think that the future advances in technology the he dreamed about in that deep dark hole were only an illusion. It is 2010, I think wind power turbines would be a cleaner solution. Good luck preserving the beauty of Hunterston. - Jeff
